Bluesmoke Design Philosophy

3. Sites should be easy to navigate.

Once you have your users interested, it's no good if they can't get to the information they need.

Too many sites rely on confusing or uninformative navigation methods, selected for spurious aesthetic reasons rather than for their contribution to a site's usability.

A navigation bar, for example, is of no use if it leaves a user to guess what will happen next when they click on one of its icons. An informative site needs to guide the user rather than presenting them with a challenge.

A site needs to be equally usable for both beginners and old hands, and this means giving navigation methods careful thought. Menus should not be confusing. Navigation bars should be easily interpretable.

Above all, whatever method is used should reflect the site's content and structure.
