Bluesmoke Design Philosophy

2. So websites need to be 'easy on the eye'.

It's those first few seconds that are vital.

The attention span of users of the web is naturally quite short, given the amount of information that can speed past on the screen with just a few clicks.

And nothing is more likely to turn users off in those first moments that they spend on your site than garish colours, insensitive use of fonts, and irritating animated graphics.

This is even more the case for users with visual impairments, who often find that the web fails to cater for their needs, particularly where Flash and DHTML are involved.

Basically, the design of a web page should be dictated by the needs of the user and of the website owner. While it's a good thing to have all kinds of tools and techniques at your disposal, they have to be used with sensitivity.

Design should not be driven solely by what techniques are available.
